Approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), residents completing the program will satisfy the ABA training requirements for board certifications in anesthesiology and critical care medicine. This five-year program also satisfies the ACGME requirements for both anesthesiology residency and subspecialty training in anesthesiology critical care medicine. An anesthesiology critical care medicine faculty will provide mentorship for the resident throughout the whole program.
This program integrates a one-year Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) Fellowship into the final two years of residency training. In addition to the core anesthesiology curriculum, residents in this track will complete nine months of critical care, one month of elective critical care and two months of elective non-critical care rotations. The nine core critical care rotations are distributed during the last two years of training, with three months of critical care in PGY-4 and six months of critical care in PGY-5. The core critical care rotations are primarily in the surgical ICU, cardiovascular ICU and medical ICU with electives in neurosurgical ICU and burn ICU.
The core critical care rotations start during PGY-4 year, however, residents will attend anesthesiology-critical care weekly didactics at the beginning of the PGY-2 year. The didactics includes ultrasound courses, critical care core lectures, journal club and M&M conferences.
Sample Rotation Schedule
One PGY-1 position will be offered through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®). Applications will be reviewed by the recruitment committee in conjunction with critical care faculty members from the department.
