Obstetric Anesthesiology

The UCI Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care obstetric anesthesiology team includes world-class specialty trained faculty who are committed to providing comprehensive anesthesia services for obstetric patients.

At UCI Health, obstetric anesthesia services are available 24 hours a day. Our obstetric anesthesiologists are board-certified and fellowship-trained in the specialty. They provide safe anesthesia care for labor and delivery, cesarean sections, postpartum procedures, as well as routine and high-risk obstetric and gynecologic surgeries. The obstetric anesthesiology division works alongside the UCI maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) obstetricians, as well as neonatologists to give consultation services and management of obstetric patients.

UCI Medical Center provides comprehensive care for expectant mothers and their newborns. We are Orange County's only regional perinatal and neonatal center that is fully equipped with the technology and specialist to manage care for high-risk pregnancies and at-risk fetuses and neonates in one facility. UCI Health division of maternal fetal medicine takes many referrals of high risk parturients from other community hospitals. We routinely manage high risk conditions such as severe prematurity, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, labile diabetes mellitus, placenta accreta and both maternal and fetal cardiac problems.

Although the number of total deliveries is modest, there is a large population of high risk obstetric patients. This is largely supported by an active MFM division and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is one of only two Level III NICUs in Orange County with a team that has vast experience in taking care of sick newborns.
