Leadership in Perioperative Medicine Fellowship

Anesthesiolgists with patient during perioperative evaluation

The Leadership in Perioperative Medicine Fellowship provides a one-year non-ACGME accredited program that is designed to cultivate skills in leadership, quality and safety, perioperative management and perioperative medicine.

The UCI Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care is a pioneer in establishing the Perioperative Surgical home initiative and is well positioned to prepare future anesthesiologists’ leaders. The face of healthcare and perioperative medicine is evolving and it is important that anesthesiologists become experienced leaders in medicine and management. The training program provides a diverse experience that is flexible and can tailor towards the needs of the individual fellows.

Program Overview and Curriculum

The role of the anesthesiologists has expanded and is becoming more involved in all phases of patient care. This training program will provide fellows with formal and hands-on training in the management of anesthesia services, perioperative services, perioperative medicine and the larger healthcare system. Fellows will gain further experience with supervision of medical students, residents, nurse practitioners and nurses within the context of the perioperative environment.

The curriculum has been developed to give fellows experience in various quality and patient safety tools to effectively lead change. In perioperative management, the fellows will gain knowledge in risk management, quality assurance, performance improvement, patient safety, regulatory affairs, compliance, billing and financial management.

The fellows will establish a practical understanding on the development and implementation of the Perioperative Surgical Home model of care. Fellows will lead projects in building and monitoring evidence-based clinical pathways within a value-based accountable care organization paradigm. Evidence-based opportunities to enhance patient care throughout the surgical continuum include collaborative decision making, lifestyle modification before surgery, standardized in-hospital care, achieving full recovery and using clinical data for quality improvement.

A primary faculty mentor will be assigned to the fellow who will provide guidance in professional development and meet on a regular basis to provide feedback and assistance in achieving the fellow’s goals and interests.

Fellowship training consist of a diverse set of topics on:

  • Quality tools, quality measurement, quality improvement
  • Science of patient safety, human factors, high reliability
  • Adverse events management, root cause analysis
  • Risk management strategies
  • Leadership and change management
  • Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
  • Operating room management
  • Basics of hospital administration
  • Health policies and ethics
  • Biostatistics
  • Design and analysis of clinical studies

Clinical Experience

In order to maintain clinical competency, the fellow will maintain a small percentage of clinical practice as an attending anesthesiologist (clinical instructor) during the program.

Academics and Research

Fellows will participate in structured didactics as well as rotations with organizational leadership and mentored clinical quality improvement projects that can be presented at national meeting conferences. In addition, fellows are encouraged to participate and work with department level research faculty and staff as well as university nationally acclaimed research faculty.

Fellows will also participate in various task forces and committees of the Quality Department and Risk and Regulatory Affairs.
