Course Description

The purpose of this activity is to provide the anesthesia provider with the necessary skills to successfully perform and implement ultrasound guided regional anesthesia in a private practice setting. Instruction includes didactics, “hands-on” ultrasound workshops, and a simulation session. Local anesthetic pharmacology, anatomy, scanning techniques, and complication management will be discussed. In addition, guest speakers will review the steps needed to incorporate, as well as compliantly bill for, ultrasound guided regional anesthesia in a practice.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be received in writing by January 25, 2012 and will be subject to a $75 processing fee. No refunds will be given after January 25, 2012. A full refund will be provided if for any reason the course must be canceled or rescheduled.

Objectives

At the conclusion, the participants should be able to:

  • Compliantly bill for regional anesthesia procedures
  • Choose the correct block for anesthesia coverage for the desired surgery
  • Identify all supplies needed to perform a peripheral nerve block
  • Practice needle manipulation by visualizing the needle with ultrasound using both in-plane and out-of-plane techniques on phantom simulators
  • Generate an ultrasound image using appropriate focus settings and transducer selection
  • Visualize and correctly identify appropriate nerve and vascular structures with ultrasound imaging
  • Explain the neuroanatomy associated with the appropriate regional block
  • Select the appropriate local anesthetic for onset of action and length of action for a certain regional block
  • Display basic scanning techniques with ultrasound, including probe manipulation for optimal image generation
  • Recognize the visual sign of inadvertent intraneural injection on ultrasound
  • Diagnose intravascular local anesthetic and treat appropriately by applying the intralipid rescue protocol in high fidelity simulation
