Howard Schwid, MD

Clinical Professor

Dr. Howard Schwid research interest has been the development and application of screen-based simulators for anesthesiology. These simulators allow clinicians to practice the management of dozens of emergency situations on computers, tablets and phones. They can be used for self-study or evaluation purposes. Dr. Schwid is currently a member of the ASA Editorial Board for Interactive Computer-Based Education.

Observation of hundreds of anesthesiologists during the management of simulated emergencies has led to interest in computerized clinical decision support systems which provide real-time alerts based on preoperative patient conditions, intraoperative events and vital signs.

Another project is ePAT – the electronic patient assessment tool. This is a tablet-based patient questionnaire which uses decision support to predict patient risks for the planned surgery and recommends preoperative testing.
