UC Irvine Health physicians continue to be leaders for a model of surgical care that may drive down hospital costs and, more importantly for patients, results in better outcomes and fewer complications.

“The perioperative surgical home delivers better patient outcomes, enhances safety and reduces costs,” said Zeev Kain, MD, MBA, chairman of the UC Irvine Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care and Chancellor’s Professor of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. “That’s not wishful thinking, it’s hard data.”

Zeev Kain, MD, MBA spoke in front of more than 5,000 attendees at this year's Opening Session at ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 in New Orleans. The ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 is an annual meeting hosted by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) where more than 15,000 attendees from over 90 countries gather to learn about the latest bench and clinical science, technology and ground-breaking advances in anesthesiology. This year's hot topic was the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care.

3rd Annual 2014 California Anesthesia Medical Student Symposium: “Understanding the Future of Anesthesiology”

On Saturday, September 27, 2014 the UC Irvine Health Anesthesiology Interest Group (AIG) hosted the 3rd Annual California Anesthesia Medical Student Symposium at the UC Irvine Medical Education Building. Registration was opened for students who were interested in pursing the exciting field of anesthesiology. Medical students were arriving from over 20 states around the country for this year’s symposium.

Harvard Anesthesiologist to Lead the Pain Management Program at UC Irvine Health

We are delighted to announce that Padma Gulur, MD, has accepted the position of director of pain services at UC Irvine Health. Gulur comes to us from Massachusetts General Hospital’s Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gulur will oversee all pain services throughout UC Irvine Medical Center and Gottschalk Medical Plaza, and will develop new pain management care delivery models for UC Irvine Health.

Congratulations to Dr. Danielle Perret and Dr. Suzanne Strom on their new leadership roles to the UC Irvine Graduate Medical Education (GME) team! The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides institutional oversight and support for all residency and fellowship programs and their trainees.

Dr. Danielle Perret has been reappointed as the Associate Dean for GME. Dr. Suzanne Strom has been appointed the Assistant Dean for CLER (Clinical Learning Environment Review) and Designated Safety Officer (DSO).

The inaugural Perioperative Surgical Home Summit hosted by UC Irvine Health Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care on June 7-8, 2014 provided medical professionals with evidence-based data for a new model of patient care that promises to improve the quality and safety of surgery in the U.S. and internationally. Data presented at the Summit demonstrates that the Perioperative Surgical Home model increases patient satisfaction, while reducing costs, complications, recovery times, and length of stay in the hospital.

UC Irvine Health’s Joint Surgical Home has come a long way since its inception in 2012 under the leadership of Dr. Zeev Kain, Dr. Ranjan Gupta and Dr. Ran Schwarzkopf. Not only the project reached its high success rate in lowering the cost of care, decreasing patient’s length of hospital stay and improving patient satisfaction, it has earned the blessing of The Joint Commission as well.

UC Irvine Health Uses Google Glass in Operating Rooms

January 2, 2014

Anesthesiologists at UC Irvine Health were able to participate in a unique program using the Google Glass device with an integrated medical app designed specifically for use in hospitals. After reading about this new medical app developed for Google Glass by a company in Austin, Texas, Pristine, Drs. Les Garson and Zeev Kain, met with the founders and decided to pursue a pilot program. The goal is to explore the potential for enhancing patient care in the operating room environment.
