Dr. Shalini Shah featured in OC Metro’s Forty Under Forty

All roads did not always lead to easing pain for Shalini Shah. Before traveling down her current career path, Shah spend a year in Egypt training to become a diplomat. Ultimately, the Palm Springs native realized her heart was set on medicine and returned stateside.

Shah’s extensive training to become the only specialist in Southern California with her unique credential to treat chronic pain in children began at New York’s Cornell University, where she completed her residency and was awarded a prestigious grant from the American Society of Anesthesiology. Next, Shah landed at Harvard Medical School, besting applicants from around the world for the only fellowship spot in the country that teaches pain management.

Under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Berde, known as the father of pediatric pain management, Shah practiced at Children’s Hospital of Boston. Now settled in Orange County at UCI Medical Center, Shah splits her time between administering anesthesia for surgery patients and helping children on the road to recovery from pain disorders at UCI’s Pain Clinic.

“I have the most perfect job,” she says. “I love what I do, and I could not have asked for anything more. My greatest success is seeing the children thrive.”
