International Rotations

Residents now have the opportunity to complete the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) approved rotations at premier Universities in France.

In Lyon, France is the Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL). Attached to UCBL are five medical centers, or “Hospices civils de Lyon” including the “Groupement Hospitalier Lyon-Est” which is the largest teaching hospital in the region and the second largest in France. This is one of the top cardiac and neuro facilities in the world, housing eight specialty operating rooms for pediatric and adult cardiothoracic and major vascular surgery as well as catheterization suites for interventional procedures, 10 specialty operating rooms for pediatric and adult neurosurgery, and 30 neuro ICU beds.

left quotation During the international rotation, I was able to see some surgical and critical care procedures that were otherwise not available at UC Irvine. Procedures like pediatric congenital heart surgeries, cardiac and lung transplants, ECMO, among many others. The opportunity to see firsthand certain aspects of socialized medicine gave me a unique perspective. Beyond the educational experience in medicine, the cultural experience was amazing! I loved the food, art, history and did I mention the food!? Overall, it was an experience I truly cherished! right quotation
Michael Gardner, MD (Class of 2016)

This rotation occurs at Hopital Cardiovasculaire et Pneumonolgique Louis Pradel (L. Pradel). L. Pradel is the main teaching center for interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. It also includes a 31 bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit that contains both adult and pediatric beds all managed by the Department of Anesthesiology faculty. In addition to French physicians undergoing training in anesthesiology, the hospital also hosts visiting trainees from multiple countries including Argentina, Columbia, North Africa and Syria.

During the rotation, the UC Irvine resident are assigned cardiothoracic cases and work 1:1 with a faculty within the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology & Critical Care. Residents will gain exposure to a broad variety of adult and pediatric cardiothoracic procedures, including transplant, CPB, off-pump, robotics, percutaneous valve replacements and interventional procedures. The residents are also involved in the postoperative care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

left quotation My clinical experience at Lyon was excellent. Louis Pradel Hospital is a major cardiovascular center in France and as such offers unparalleled exposure to a diverse array of cardiac surgeries including minimally invasive procedures such as TAVI and mitral clips to major cardiac and vascular surgeries such as heart and lung transplants. Lyon itself was an interesting place to live, richly steeped in history and considered by most to be the gastronomical center of France. right quotation
