Advance Practice Providers

The UCI Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care advance practice providers includes nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) that are trained to assess and diagnose patients in specialized healthcare areas with the collaboration of anesthesiology providers and through approved protocols.

The advance practice providers are an integral member of our multidisciplinary team that provides high quality, safe patient care. They assist in coordinating with the primary surgical and medicine teams for a comprehensive treatment plan for the patients and ensures that each patient receives appropriate care before, during and after a visit.

Our NPs have subspecialty knowledge in different areas of patient care within the department which includes pain management, critical care and perioperative care. NPs with pain management knowledge will assist in managing patients’ pain issues by identifying patients who would benefit from peripheral nerve blocks, thoracic epidural catheters and non-traditional modalities of medication management. The perioperative NPs provides patients with the pre-anesthesia assessment to ensure that a patient is optimized for surgery and to identify patients with unstable and complicated illnesses. Our cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) NPs manages and coordinate treatments of critical hospitalized patients in the CVICU, in addition to patients in the anesthesia critical care service.

Our PAs with a subspecialty in pain management, assists in navigating chronic pain issues of patients at the UCI Center for Pain & Wellness. They inform and educate patients of the treatment plan the healthcare provider has tailored for each individual.
